Data can often impersonalize issues and keep us from realizing the gravity of a situation. For instance, when we discuss the number of abortions that take place every day, it may be challenging to comprehend that each number represents a complete whole person who was wonderfully and uniquely created.
Looking at the number of abortions that take place in the world, the numbers are staggering. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), they estimate that 73,000,000 abortions are performed each year, breaking it down to 200,000 every single day. (1)
To put that number into perspective, it’s as if you wake up one morning and hear the news that the entire population of Lubbock, Texas, was killed. Then, the next day, it’s Salt Lake City, Utah. The next is Spokane, WA. Then, Huntington Beach, California. And every day for the entire year, you read about the population of entire cities being obliterated.
And then, you hear of all of the trauma that parents deal with after losing their children. This is the picture of abortion in our world. The picture can seem grievous and hopeless.
Yet, we know there is an answer, and the answer is in Jesus Christ. He is our hope, our healing, and our truth. Hebrews 6:19 reminds us, “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”
Jesus Christ offers hope when unplanned pregnancies seem hopeless. Jesus offers healing and redemption when abortion decisions have been made, leaving a trail of devastation. Jesus is the answer to all that avails humanity.
And it is with this premise that the church carries the answer about abortion to the world. May we be God’s vessels of support, love, and truth for those struggling with an unplanned pregnancy, and may we be conduits of hope and healing for those struggling with a previous abortion decision.
