Post-Abortion Healing

Healing the Pain from Abortion

On any given Sunday, you will find at least a quarter of church attendees carrying an abortion decision in their past. Many feel as if they are the only one and sometimes think perhaps they have committed an unforgivable sin. They rarely, if ever, hear a message on forgiveness, wholeness and restoration from abortion which only furthers their feelings of hopelessness. The enemy relentlessly heaps shame, condemnation and guilt leaving many to stay silent. He knows the powerhouses they will be once they walk in God’s forgiveness and grace.

The church was always meant to be the place of healing. Believers should be the greatest conduits of Christ’s freedom as each one of us has experienced His grace and mercy. We know that it’s only by His stripes that we are healed. Believers are called to set the captives free and many captives are all around us. Perhaps it’s you. The Lord wants to free you from your pain and replace it with peace and wholeness. This is the reason for the cross – to bring freedom and restoration to each one of us.

With recent political responses from the overturning of Roe v. Wade, abortion is being talked about everywhere. Where does that leave those who are struggling with their past abortion? Often, it furthers their resolve to hide as they are constantly having to revisit an experience that has caused great trauma.

This is why the Church is positioned to be the most powerful conduit of freedom. How you might ask? By offering a place and the time for those who are seeking healing to find it. One such program a church can offer is called Surrendering the Secret. It is a DVD based curriculum that has incredible success in bringing hope and healing. It has been used for years to set people free by living out Revelation 12:11a, “They triumphed over him (the accuser) by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.”

When we walk into the Christ’s gift of redemption and share our story of what God has done in our lives, we render the enemy powerless. In fact, if we really want to see abortion end in our country, we must bring healing to those who are struggling with a past abortion.

“These women (and men) who have lived through the agony of abortion, are perhaps, the most powerful  witness we have for the lives of the unborn, the pain of abortion, and offer some of the most powerful pro-life voices today.”

Karen Swallow Prior, Ph.D.
