Many in religious circles believe that abortion is a political issue and should not be discussed within the church. However, the opposite is true.
Abortion is not merely a political issue; it is a spiritual one. It involves the enemy of our souls attacking the image-bearers of Almighty God and inflicting spiritual harm on their mothers and fathers. When we categorize abortion solely as a political matter, we shift the responsibility onto politicians, making it impersonal and a mere question of public policy. As a church, we are called to support those in crisis and help them find Biblical solutions to their problems. We cannot leave a spiritual problem for politicians to solve and relinquish the power of God’s Word.
John 10:10 states, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
The enemy’s objective is death and destruction, which perfectly aligns with the nature of abortion. God’s goal, on the other hand, is abundant life. If we expect politicians to do a better job of standing for life than the church, we have failed to grasp its spiritual nature.
It is the Church’s role to support mothers and fathers who find themselves in overwhelming situations due to unplanned pregnancies. It is the Church’s message of the value of all life that will advocate for the defenseless. And it is the Church’s love that will provide hope and healing to those who have experienced abortion.
While laws do matter because they impact people, and there is value in engaging politically on the issue of abortion, politicians have no power beyond establishing human-made laws which are ever changing and unstable. Let us not relinquish our God-given role to politicians who are ultimately powerless to address abortion and its aftermath in a life-giving manner. Regardless of the political landscape, the Church is positioned to make abortion unthinkable by demonstrating love and support for those facing unplanned pregnancies and by bringing hope and healing to those who have been affected by abortion.
Abortion is a spiritual issue, and our culture is in desperate need of the church to live out Jesus’ mission of “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10b).
