The Beginning of Life

When does life begin?

It’s a question that’s been tossed around for decades. The answer provokingly moves us to decide whether abortion is ethical or not? If human life begins at conception, then ethically, shouldn’t the preborn be protected? If human life begins sometime later or at the moment of birth, then should abortion be okay?

Most would agree that biologists would have the best understanding and knowledge as to when human life begins.

In the landmark Supreme Court Dobbs case decided over a year ago, a survey was submitted to the court wherein it had asked biologists this very question, “when does life begin?” In summary, the findings concluded:

“According to a survey conducted for the nonpartisan Brief of Biologists as Amici Curiae in Support of Neither Party filed with the Supreme Court for the Dobbs case: (1)

  • 96 percent of the 5,577 biologists from 1,058 academic institutions affirmed that a human’s life begins at fertilization.
  • 85 percent of the 5,577 biologists self-identified as pro-choice, 89 percent self-identified as liberal, and 95 percent held a Ph.D.
  • 63 percent self-identified as non-religious.
  • The sample was composed of biologists from 86 countries.”

It’s interesting to note that even liberal, pro-choice (pro-abortion) biologists agree that life begins at the moment of conception.

We know according to Scripture that every life is created uniquely in the image of God and has inherent value and purpose – worthy of protection. Psalm 139:13-16 beautifully describes the beginning our lives:

For you created my inmost being;
    you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
    when I was made in the secret place,
    when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
    all the days ordained for me were written in your book
    before one of them came to be.

Scripture and biology reach the same conclusion: life begins at conception. Watch the video below to see the amazing journey of the beginning of life.
